Happy New Year!
It’s officially 2025, and that magical first week of January is here – the time when we make grand resolutions, set ambitious goals, and convince ourselves that this year will be the year we finally figure it all out. And yet, for many of us, even the small decisions—like picking the right notebook or new trainers—can leave us paralysed.
Sound familiar?
Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Decision-making is tough, and sometimes we overcomplicate it. Whether you’re choosing a new business strategy, a venue for your next event, or simply what’s for dinner tonight, there’s always that nagging thought: What if I get it wrong?
But here’s the kicker: what if there’s no such thing as a “right” decision?
The Myth of the Right Choice
A few months ago, I spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to choose a notebook. I know, not exactly life-altering, but I agonised over it like it was a major career decision. Should I go for lined or dotted pages? Spiral-bound or stitched? Eventually, my daughter intervened with some sage advice: “Buy a notebook, Dad.”
So, I did. No flowers on the cover, no month of contemplation—just a quick choice. And guess what? It works. I can write notes on it just as well as if I’d spent weeks researching.
It made me realise that so much of our stress in decision-making comes from this idea that there’s one “correct” option out there, and if we choose poorly, the universe will fall apart. Spoiler alert: it won’t.
Decisions Are Just Stories We Tell Ourselves
Let’s imagine you’re naming a new product for your business. You choose a name you think is brilliant. A year later, sales are slow, and you’re convinced you got it wrong. Then you tweak your marketing, and suddenly things take off. Was the name ever really the problem? Or was it just a convenient story to fit the moment?
The truth is, decisions don’t exist in isolation.
Every choice we make ripples out, creating a web of consequences—some good, some bad, and many completely unexpected. You might decide to work from home, which means less commuting (great!) but also more distractions (not so great).
There’s no way to predict every outcome, and that’s okay. The goal isn’t to find the “perfect” solution—it’s to make a choice and keep moving forward.
Save Your Brainpower for What Matters
Let’s face it: we all spend way too much energy overthinking the small stuff. Whether it’s choosing between chicken or lamb for dinner or deciding on a new cover photo for your Facebook page, these are decisions that won’t make or break your life or business.
So, here’s my New Year’s challenge to you: start making decisions faster. Reserve your mental energy for the big stuff—the decisions that truly matter.
And when it comes to those major decisions, remember that even if things don’t go as planned, you’ve learned something valuable.
Building Confidence in Your Choices
In 2025, let’s embrace the idea that there’s no such thing as a perfect decision. Instead, focus on:
- Trusting Your Instincts: Sometimes, your gut knows more than you think.
- Taking Action: Even a so-so decision is better than no decision at all.
- Learning and Adapting: Every outcome, good or bad, is an opportunity to grow.
The sooner you stop chasing the mythical “right” choice, the sooner you’ll start making progress—and isn’t that what we all want for the New Year?
