Doing Something That Means Something: Finding Purpose in Your Business

Finding purpose in your business

As business owners, we spend a lot of time thinking about what we do and how we do it – the products, the services, the systems, the goals, but how often do we stop to think about why we do it?

Our why is the heartbeat of everything. It’s what gives meaning to the long days, the tricky decisions, and even the admin (yes, even that!). When we connect our business to something that really matters to us, everything changes. The work feels lighter, more purposeful, and far more rewarding.

People Coming Together

Finding purpose in your business - charity golf day

This Friday is Children in Need Day, a moment when the whole country seems to pause and pull together for a cause that matters. It’s one of those lovely reminders that what we do, in our own small ways, can have a ripple effect. Whether it’s a silly costume day in the office, sitting in a bath full of beans, just making a donation, or (in our case) hosting a charity golf day, we’re reminded that giving back connects us to something bigger than ourselves.

Making a Difference Through Business

This applies, in business too. At The Business Clubhouse, we’ve always believed that business should be about more than profits, targets, or ticking boxes. It should make a difference: to you, your team, your clients, and your community. That belief is at the heart of everything we do.

One of the causes that’s especially close to our hearts is Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care. They do incredible work supporting people with life-limiting illnesses and their families, providing care, comfort, and dignity when it matters most. It’s a cause that resonates deeply with us because it’s about compassion, humanity, and making every moment count, values that sit at the core of how we try to show up both as individuals and as a business.

Purpose in Action

Supporting Rennie Grove isn’t just a tick-box exercise for us. It’s part of our why. It reminds us that what we do in business gives us the ability to make a difference; to give time, money, or energy to something meaningful. Honestly, that’s one of the most fulfilling things about running a business.

When your work gives you the means to support a cause, or the flexibility to show up for your family, or the platform to raise awareness about something important, it transforms from being just a business into being part of your story.

So, as Children in Need comes around, I’d love to invite you to think about your own why.

  • What does “doing something that means something” look like for you?
  • Which causes, values, or people light that spark inside you?
  • And how could your business, no matter how big or small, help you live that out?

It doesn’t have to be about grand gestures. Often, it’s the small, consistent acts that create the biggest impact. Maybe it’s choosing local suppliers who align with your ethics, offering flexible work to support your team’s wellbeing, mentoring someone just starting out, or making space for charitable giving in your business plan.

Quiet Purpose, Lasting Change

Purpose doesn’t always shout. Sometimes it’s quiet, sitting in the decisions you make every day, in the way you treat people, or in the causes you quietly support behind the scenes. When your business reflects what truly matters to you, it becomes something you love again.

So, as you see Pudsey Bear on your screen this Friday and the nation comes together for Children in Need, take a moment to celebrate the good you’re already doing, and maybe think of one more small way your business could make a difference.

When you do something that means something, it doesn’t just change the lives of others. It changes yours too.
