Why Ongoing Training is Good for Business (and Even Better for People)

A leader showing the need to invest in team training

I’ve always believed that a business is only as strong as the people in it. Whether you’re running a team of five or fifty, investing in training – for yourself and for your team – isn’t just a ‘nice to have’. It’s essential.

That might sound like a bold statement, but bear with me. I’m not just talking about formal qualifications or week-long conferences (though they can be great). I’m talking about any kind of learning that helps someone build their confidence, improve their performance, or develop in their role. From brushing up on IT skills to learning how to manage people better, training can be the spark that reignites motivation, improves team performance and, ultimately, drives your business forward.

So let’s unpack why training matters, what the benefits really are, and how encouraging your team to keep learning can make a massive difference.

Learning New Skills Keeps Us Relevant

Let’s start with the obvious. Things change – fast. Technology evolves, new systems emerge, industries adapt. What worked well five years ago might now be completely outdated. I think we all know someone who’s had to quickly get to grips with new software or tools just to keep up – and it can be daunting if you’re not prepared.

That’s where regular training comes in. When you (or your team) learn a new skill, you’re not just adding a string to your bow – you’re staying relevant and future-proofing your business. Whether it’s learning a new IT system, understanding basic finance, or improving customer service, those new skills can unlock efficiency, improve service delivery, and boost your bottom line.

And it’s not just about the tech. Learning how to communicate more effectively, give feedback, or manage time better are all skills that have a real, tangible impact on your business.

Enhancing What You Already Know

Training isn’t only for those starting from scratch. In fact, some of the most valuable training is about enhancing and refreshing what we already know. Because, let’s be honest, we all pick up bad habits over time.

We get comfortable doing things a certain way, even if there’s a better, faster or more efficient option.  That’s why ongoing development is so important. It gives people the chance to reflect, sharpen their tools, and approach familiar tasks with fresh eyes. And this applies across the board, from your newest recruit to your most experienced manager.

I once worked with someone who’d been in the same role for years. They were brilliant, but even they admitted they were stuck in their ways. After a short refresher course in their area of expertise, they came back energised, with new ideas and a real sense of purpose. Sometimes, even a small change in approach can make a big difference.

Training Builds Confidence – and Confidence Drives Performance

One of the most noticeable effects of training that’s often overlooked – is the boost in confidence it gives people. When someone feels skilled, supported, and competent, they show up differently. They’re more proactive, more engaged, and more willing to contribute ideas.

And that’s good news for you as a business owner.

A confident team member doesn’t just do the job – they improve it. They’re better at problem-solving, take more initiative, and are more likely to support others too. You start to build a team that doesn’t just do what’s expected, but looks for ways to do it better.

It Shows You Care

Providing training also sends a clear message to your team: “I value you.”

You’re telling them that you want to invest in them, that you believe in their potential, and that you want them to succeed and grow.

This matters more than ever.

People want to feel part of something. They want to know they’re not just another cog in the machine. Offering regular opportunities to learn and develop helps with motivation, loyalty and retention. And let’s be honest, in a world where recruiting is time-consuming and expensive, keeping great people is just good business sense.

It Encourages a Culture of Growth

When you build training and development into your culture, something quite powerful happens.

Learning becomes normal.

Curiosity is encouraged.

People start sharing what they know, helping each other, and looking for ways to improve.

Mistakes become learning opportunities rather than things to hide.

That’s the kind of environment where innovation thrives. It’s also the kind of workplace people want to be part of – positive, progressive and supportive.

Don’t Forget About Yourself

It’s easy as a business owner to focus on everyone else’s development and forget about your own. But the truth is, we all need a top-up now and then.

In fact, that’s exactly why I’ve spent the week in the USA attending The Making of a Champion convention with Leadership Management International (LMI). It’s part of my commitment to strengthening my own leadership capabilities and making sure I can continue to support my clients and team with the very best of what I’ve learned. It’s been an inspiring experience – one that’s reminded me just how important it is to take time out of the day-to-day and invest in growth. Not just for the business, but for myself too.

Your development is just as important as anyone else’s – not just for your business, but for your own confidence and enjoyment as a leader.

What are you waiting for?

Training isn’t just about ticking a box or meeting a requirement. It’s about keeping things fresh, staying ahead of the curve, and creating an environment where people feel empowered to do their best work.

So whether it’s signing up for a short course, encouraging your team to share knowledge, or simply making time to read a business book or attend a webinar – make learning part of the way you work.

When you invest in skills, you’re really investing in people. And that’s what builds a business that not just works but actually thrives.
