If It’s Not on Instagram, Did It Happen? The Invisible Habits Behind Real Success

If It's Not on Instagram, Did It Happen? The Invisible Habits Behind Real Success

We’ve all seen the flashy posts on Instagram – the keynote speeches, the book launches, the stunning offices with a vie, but a recent conversation with a leader in our coaching programme really got me thinking…

“I spent six months rebuilding our entire operations system. It saved us £50K annually and gave our team back 15 hours each week. Not a single person liked it on LinkedIn.”

We laughed, but it hit a nerve.

In today’s business world, where everything is about visibility, we’ve created a paradox: the work that looks impressive often gets celebrated, while the work that genuinely transforms businesses happens behind the scenes.

So let’s talk about it – the invisible, unsexy grind that actually makes businesses and leaders successful.

The Work You Don’t See: Why Quiet Consistency Beats Social Media Highlights

We’ve all seen the business influencer’s Instagram with the events, the glossy photos, the motivational speeches, yet where are the posts about the 5am writing sessions, the failed product launches, the endless spreadsheets, or the uncomfortable client conversations?

“Success leaves clues,” they say but the most important clues are often invisible:

  • The finance director preventing a cashflow crisis by building solid forecasting systems.
  • The HR manager creating a culture of psychological safety that reduces turnover.
  • The operations lead refining processes and saving hundreds of hours.
  • The entrepreneur studying financial statements every Sunday morning.

These aren’t the kinds of things that make for a good Instagram post, but they’re the very things that drive real success.

As a client once told me…“The moments that transformed my business happened in quiet rooms, in difficult conversations, and in spreadsheets that nobody outside my company will ever see. None of it would get a single like on Instagram.”

Doing What Matters: Why the Boring Bits Build Businesses (Even If Nobody’s Watching)

When we value only what can be photographed, we create blind spots in our businesses.

Think about it, when was the last time you saw someone post about:

  • Reviewing their company handbook?
  • Practising difficult feedback conversations?
  • Learning to read financial statements?
  • Testing failed marketing strategies?
  • Documenting internal processes?

These tasks don’t make it to the highlight reel yet these “boring bits” are the foundation of success – just ask the owner of any successful business.

I’ve coached hundreds of business owners, and one thing stands out: the ones who focus on the invisible work, who put in the effort even when it doesn’t generate content, are the ones who build long-term, sustainable success.

I used to worry about what would make good content for our company page. Now I focus on what makes a good company and it turns out, they’re rarely the same thing.

Beyond the Highlights Reel: Embracing the Unseen Work That Fuels Success

The real issue isn’t social media itself but how we’ve allowed social media’s values to shape our definition of success.

When we equate business success with visibility, we create a hierarchy where:

  • Public speaking trumps deep thinking.
  • Content creation outranks content implementation.
  • Quick wins take priority over sustainable growth.
  • External validation becomes more important than internal integrity.

This leads to a constant sense of being behind, as business owners compare their behind-the-scenes to everyone else’s highlight reels.

The most successful leaders we work with understand this. They know that visibility might be an outcome of success but it’s rarely the cause

The Power of Invisible Practice: Success in a World Obsessed with Show and Tell

So how can we start valuing the invisible work that fuels success?

Here are a few principles that have worked for us:

  1. Create Private Metrics of Success:  Focus on the things that truly matter for your business, even if they don’t impress others. These could include team retention, profit margins, or customer satisfaction.
  2. Celebrate the Invisible Heroes: Recognise the team members doing vital but often unglamorous work. They’re the backbone of your business.
  3. Develop a Practice Mindset: Like athletes or musicians, business leaders need to view their work as practice, not performance. The public result is just the outcome of hours of invisible practice.
  4. Value Depth Over Breadth: Rather than trying to juggle multiple platforms and engagements, go deep on what truly matters in your business.
  5. Build Reflection Into Your Routine: Take the time to assess what’s actually moving the needle in your business, not just what feels productive or looks impressive.

The Quiet Path to Lasting Success

I’ve seen firsthand that the businesses which thrive long-term aren’t necessarily the ones with the biggest social media followings. They’re the ones doing the behind-the-scenes work, the boring bits that create the foundations of success.

So, the next time you ask yourself, “If it’s not on Instagram, did it happen?” – remember that the most important work often leaves no digital footprint at all. It happens in quiet offices, in thoughtful decisions, and in the daily grind.
