Last week we held our annual ‘away day’ (it’s actually an away two-days but that’s not as catchy!), a chance to step away from the daily whirlwind and spend time on the business rather than in it.
It’s amazing what happens when you pull a group of like-minded business owners together in one room. There’s an instant sense of energy, the kind that only comes when you’re surrounded by people who get it. Running a business can be lonely at times, and I find having that social fabric, that space to share ideas and challenges, is genuinely powerful.
Professional vs Amateur: Where’s Your Focus?
One of the big conversations of the day was around what separates a professional business owner from an amateur.
The amateur gets caught up in the day-to-day, chasing emails, firefighting, never quite finding the time to look at the bigger picture. The professional makes time to understand their numbers, build stronger systems, and make decisions that move the business forward.
It’s not about working harder, it’s about doing things with intention. Professionals plan, review, and adjust. They know that the uncomfortable work, the stuff we tend to avoid, is often the very thing that leads to real growth.
As one of our clients said during the session, “Everything you want is on the other side of the hard work you’re avoiding.”
That one stopped everyone for a moment. It’s probably an essay on its own, but it definitely hit home.
Progress Beats Perfection
We started the day by revisiting the goals we set last year: the wins, the misses, and the lessons in between.
Why?
…because progress always beats perfection. You don’t have to nail everything; you just have to keep moving forward, even if it’s just by 1%.
That reflection sparked some honest conversations about what worked, what didn’t, and what needs to change.
Then we brought in the Wheel of Life to get a bigger picture of where people were feeling satisfied and where they weren’t. It’s one of my favourite tools and something I revisit regularly for myself, as it highlights what’s really important, not just what looks good on paper.
Finding the Why
Once everyone had mapped out their new goals, the next step was to challenge them.
Why this goal? Why now? Why does it really matter?
The room was full of open, honest discussion, whilst helping each other refine, rethink, and reframe their focus for the year ahead.
One of our clients, Emma, shared how the personal leadership course she’s been working through has changed her perspective completely. Her insight that “it’s very hard to change existing habits and much easier to start a new page” really resonated. Sometimes, rather than wrestling with old habits, it’s about drawing that line and starting fresh.
Connection, Clarity and Commitment
By the end of the second day, everyone had a set of meaningful, clearly defined goals with practical steps to achieve them. It was more than that though, there was a real sense of connection in the room – of honesty, mutual support and shared ambition.
It reminded me that success in business isn’t just about strategy or systems; it’s also about community and surrounding yourself with people who will challenge, support and celebrate with you.
Just because we’re all running our own businesses, we don’t have to do it alone.
If that sounds like something you’d like to be a part of, a space to reflect, refocus and connect with other business owners, get in touch.
Let’s have a quick chat and see if it’s a good fit for where you are right now.
