I had a conversation with a client today that stopped both of us in our tracks.
It began with a familiar theme, one I’ve heard time and again from people on the brink of stepping into success.
She was nervous about putting herself out there more on social media. She had big goals, but the fear was loud:
“What if people criticise me?”
“What if I get trolled?”
“What if I look stupid?”
She was right on the edge of visibility, and like so many others, she was hesitating because of the very real fear of judgement.
“You Need a Thicker Skin” — But How Do You Get One?
We talked about the need to develop a thicker skin.
To strengthen our mindset so the noise doesn’t derail us and to build the kind of internal resilience that lets you keep showing up, even when it’s hard, even when you’re scared.
That’s when I asked her something a little unexpected:
“You ride horses a lot, don’t you?”
She nodded. “Yes, I’ve ridden since I was little.”
“I presume you’ve got callouses on your hands from years of holding the reins?”
“Yes. Loads,” she said immediately.
“Those callouses didn’t appear before you started riding, did they?
They appeared as you rode. And the more you rode, the more you did the thing, the tougher your skin got.”
Silence…
Then a Realisation.
You could feel the lightbulb go on.
The very thing she was trying to avoid, the discomfort of showing up publicly and maybe being criticised, was exactly what would help her build the resilience she needed.
Just like her hands toughened over time from riding, so does our mindset toughen over time from doing the thing we fear.
You don’t grow confidence before you start, you build it as you go.
You don’t develop courage before you leap, you strengthen it with every leap you take.
You don’t create a thick skin in anticipation, you build it through experience.
You Become by Doing
And yes, it might sting a bit at first.
Yes – you might wobble, falter, or question yourself.
But each time you do the thing anyway, each time you show up despite the fear, you’re forming those mental callouses.
You’re becoming the person you need to be in order to create the success you want.
And you can’t shortcut that.
You become by doing.
