Yesterday, I sat down with eight service-based business owners who were all facing the same challenge…they were no longer just delivering the work, but not yet fully leading their businesses.
We created a safe space where we could be honest about what’s working, what’s not, and what really needs to change.
What followed was a lively, challenging, and encouraging discussion. And at the heart of it was a simple but powerful tool: Stop, Start, Continue.
The simplicity that creates clarity
The Stop, Start, Continue model works like this:
- Stop: identify what’s draining your energy or slowing you down
- Start: bring in what will move you and the business forward
- Continue: keep what’s working and worth building on
We explored it across four areas that matter in every service-led business: Marketing, Sales, Finance and Delivery.
Marketing – from scattergun to strategic
One business owner admitted:
“I’m still doing all the content myself. I post, react, chase trends, and I don’t know what’s actually working.”
That opened the floodgates and together, we uncovered this:
- Stop: trying to be everywhere, reacting to every trend, and doing it all yourself
- Start: planning with intent and create a steady rhythm of content that aligns with your message and goals
- Continue: stick with the channels that already bring in high-quality clients
The shift: you stop being the content machine and become the architect of your brand.
Sales – from hustle to consistency
Another confessed:
“If I don’t take the call, the sale doesn’t happen. Everything depends on me.”
It resonated across the table. Here’s what emerged:
- Stop: customising everything, being in every conversation, juggling sales alongside delivery
- Start: build a sales process with repeatable offers, clear follow-ups, and ways to delegate
- Continue: nurture the relationships and channels that consistently bring in good leads
The shift: you’re no longer the sole salesperson, you become the strategist driving revenue.
Finance – from reacting to leading
This was a tough one:
“I only look at the numbers when something feels off.”
A truth many could relate to.
The clarity came here:
- Stop: running on gut feel and avoiding numbers until there’s a problem
- Start: schedule regular reviews, forecasts, and reports to guide decisions
- Continue: use data as a tool for insight, not just a backward glance
The shift: you move from financial firefighter to confident decision-maker.
Delivery – from bottleneck to builder
Perhaps the hardest realisation of all:
“Clients still expect me to do all the delivery. I haven’t created any structure.”
This is where real growth happens:
- Stop: being the only one who can deliver results
- Start: documenting processes, training others, and building systems to protect your time
- Continue: hold quality and outcomes as sacred, scale without losing standards
The shift: you move from lone expert to builder of consistent, high-quality client experiences.
What it all points to
Stop, Start, Continue is simple, but the mindset shift is anything but.
It’s about moving from doing everything yourself to leading with intention.
From being the business to building the business and from reacting to designing.
As one business owner summed it up:
“I know exactly what needs to stop now. That’s the clarity I needed.”
Try it yourself
Take 20 minutes this week. Run your own Stop, Start, Continue across marketing, sales, finance, and delivery.
Even better, do it with your team.
Invite challenge, make space for honesty, and open the door to leadership clarity.
I’ve even put together a simple worksheet to help you put this into practice.
Over to you
So let me ask: what’s the one thing you know you need to stop doing right now in your business?
Drop it in the comments. Let’s build on this conversation together.
